Comfort level explosion!

Incredible Room in a Box Furniture Set

Why is transforming furniture so alluring? Does it appeal to our sense that innovation is progress, the fact that fewer materials for more uses is sustainable or simply a return to the childhood love of things that we can actively change and shape as we wish? Whatever the reason, these designs range from humorous and impractical to jaw-droppingly cool. Be sure to scroll all the way down: the best (pictured briefly above) has been saved for last!

Cool Transforming Sofa Chair Design

This comfy number is not one nor two but three pieces of furniture in one: a sofa, lounger and a chair. A good deal of transforming furniture looks or feels better in one configuration or another, but this three-in-one by Roel Verhagen-Kaptein is appealing in each of its transformations.Awesome Japanese Folding Chair Design

Normally we think of convertible furniture as transforming from one useful thing into something else with a practical function. These simply elegant folding chairs by Studio Dror collapse into something you might actually want to use simply for wall decoration: a simpler refined furniture solution than sticking cheap folding chairs back into the closet.

Creative Collapsible Dining Room Table Set

Next time you go on a picnic with some friends you may want to grab a second basket, the so-called Mealbox by Igland Design. Fourteen puzzle pieces slip out of this simple container and assemble into a table and chairs that seat six - a humorous variation on fast food.

Ecological Bench Chair Furniture Design

Compact, clever and portable, the Fence Chair by Alain Berteau is a simple blend of traditional picket fence vernacular and sustainable modularity. The repeated use of a single simple form allows for compact shipping and the seats can be split or joined as needed.

Extendable Sleek Modern Shelving System

A storable box or subtle side table by all appearances, this articulated shelving system by Bertrand Pinceman folds out into a rather nice bookcase. It is designed to work both on its side and upright.

Extending Dining Table and Chairs Design

Marta Antoszkeiwicz’s design is not like most transforming furniture that relies on clever bends, twists and hidden tricks to work. This simple table and chairs set relies only on sliding pieces under and out from under one another. The result, though, is impressive: chairs that go well with the table in either configuration and don’t look like extra elements.

Kitchenette with FoldOut Chairs and Counter

Similar in principle to a Murphy bed (which folds down from the wall when needed) this cabinet dining room set has everything one needs to sit down to a comfortable meal and then slides back into place. Neat as this complete furniture solution sounds, though, it isn’t clear how much space is needed behind-the-scenes to make it work.

Sofa Bed Table Chair Combined Furniture

Yellow might not be the best color, but you have to appreciate this simply brilliant Tetris-based Chairs + Table design. Aside from the sofa, bed, and chairs-and-tables configuration these also pack up nicely to be stored. The material is designed to be soft enough to be comfortable but resilient enough to work as an eating or work surface. Also, one could imagine that, with sufficient pieces, other creative furniture constructions would be possible.

Transformer Bed Sofa Combination Furniture

We’re all familiar with beds that fold out from sofas, but few do so as easily and elegantly as this one by Flou. In Modernist tradition, the form of the bed is also partly visible in the form of the couch with each fold-out layer articulated individually.

Transforming Furniture Chair to Kitchenette

Now this one is particularly strange: a stove and kitchen workspace that doubles as a comfortable chair? An odd combination to be sure, but it is a step in an interesting direction. This kind of out-of-the-box thinking could result in furniture that not only serves a similar function to its counterpart but that would have different purposes in various rooms around a house.

4 Modular Bedroom Furniture Set

Would you believe that everything shown in the above image can be fit into a box that is less than 3 feet by 4 feet? The creative furniture within can be carried, unpacked and rapidly assembled by just two people. It probably goes without saying but: the box itself is also reused in the final results. Check out the video below to see the boxed room in action and go here to see more awesome urban furniture!

Discovery in the Age of Mammals: Building Brains and Making Minds

One hallmark of mammals is the evolution of a highly developed brain capable of orchestrating amazingly complex behaviors. What our minds do so effortlessly ** the ability to nurture and love, the ability to learn, to make decisions and to solve problems, the ability to communicate through verbal and non-verbal languages, the ability to form deep social networks, the ability to be consciously aware of the world ** arises from our highly developed brains. This theme will be explored in depth with six of the most eminent scholars, writers, and speakers on the brains and minds of mammals, including humans.

6:30pm, DISCUSSION:
“The Elephant’s Secret Sense”

Join us and take a look at aspects of elephant society that contribute to survival, including new findings on that society’s multi-modal communication, dominance, relatedness and hormone expression. New discoveries about elephant bull society will be reviewed, emphasizing the importance of bonding and mentoring. Caitlin O’Connell-Rodwell has been studying the underground communication system of wild elephant herds for 14 years – she’s convinced it’s a much richer one than previously thought. This discussion will highlight her work with elephants and the discoveries about their capacity to communicate seismic activity in a multimedia presentation and discussion.

Art Imitating…Art?

Thursday, January 3, 2008

Mf_doom_3 Has masked hip-hop renegade MF Doom been dispatching lip-syncing look-alikes to cover his shows? The controversy came to light after a disastrous August 15th performance at San Francisco’s live music venue the Independent that featured a noticeably skinnier and particularly furtive Doom rapping for twenty minutes – into a dead mic. According to opening act DJ Enki, Doom’s abrupt departure provoked an already frustrated audience: fans booed, threw bottles, called for a refund (no such luck), and left convinced that Doom, or whoever performed, never rapped a word.“The only thing that was live about the show was the hype man’s mic,” DJ Enki says.

Fans took to the message boards, only to find that similar scenes had played out days earlier at the El Rey Theatre in LA, and, before that, the July 29th Rock the Bells show in NY. Though the performer at both shows physically matched Doom, witnesses claim he lip-synced. And as music outlets began circulating different accounts, increasingly strange details emerged: no audience interaction, unusually stringent bans on photographs and video recordings, a backstage on total lockdown.

The plot thickens: Two weeks later and Doom and his alleged impostor have gone MIA. He canceled the second Independent performance citing medical reasons, withdrew from an August 17th set in Seattle, skipped out on the San Francisco date of massive hip hop festival Rock the Bells, and called off an August 19th appearance in San Diego.

The ever-elusive underground hip-hop star, who has collaborated with Madlib and DJ Danger Mouse, could not be reached, but Nature Sounds CEO Devin Horwitz, Doom’s friend and business associate, says the accusations are “hard to take seriously.” The brief sets, Horwitz says, were simply part of Doom’s contract, as he is “not the kind of artist that does a two hour show.” The impostors and lip-syncing? Horwitz says he’s accompanied Doom to at least 20 performances, including the disputed NY show, and “never witnessed anything of that sort” - though he does understand the

David Byrne and Thom Yorke on the Real Value of Music

It seemed like a crazy idea. When Radiohead said it would release its new album, In Rainbows, as a pay-what-you-will digital download, you’d have thought the band had gone communist. After all, Thom Yorke and company are one of the world’s most successful groups — a critical darling as well as a fan favorite for nearly 15 years. They hadn’t put out a new album in more than four years, and the market was hungry for their next disc. So why would Radiohead conduct such a radical experiment?

While pay-what-you-will worked for Radiohead, though, it’s hard to imagine the model paying off for Miley Cyrus — aka chart-topping teenybopper Hannah Montana. Cyrus’ label, Walt Disney Records, will stick to selling CDs in Wal-Mart, thank you very much. But the truth is that Radiohead didn’t intend In Rainbows to start a revolution. The experiment simply proves there is plenty of room for innovation in the music business — this is just one of many new paths. Wired asked David Byrne — a legendary innovator himself and the man who wrote the Talking Heads song “Radio Head” from which the group takes its name — to talk with Yorke about the In Rainbows distribution strategy and what others can learn from the experience.

Byrne: OK.

Yorke: [To assistant.] Shut the bloody door.

Byrne: Well, nice record, very nice record.

Yorke: Thank you. Wicked.

Byrne: [Laughs.]

Yorke: That’s it, isn’t it?

Byrne: That’s it, we’re done. [Laughs.] OK. I’ll start by asking some of the business stuff. What you did with this record wasn’t traditional, not even in the sense of sending advance copies out to the press and such.

Yorke: The way we termed it was “our leak date.” Every record for the last four — including my solo record — has been leaked. So the idea was like, we’ll leak it, then.

Byrne: Previously there’d be a release date, and advance copies would get sent to reviewers months ahead of that.

Yorke: Yeah, and then you’d ring up and say, “Did you like it? What did you think?” And it’s three months in advance. And then it’d be, “Would you go do this for this magazine,” and maybe this journalist has heard it. All these silly games.

Byrne: That’s mainly about the charts, right? About gearing marketing and prerelease to the moment a record comes out so that — boom! — it goes into the charts.

Yorke: That’s what major labels do, yeah. But it does us no good, because we don’t cross over [to other fan bases]. The main thing was, there’s all this bollocks [with the media]. We were trying to avoid that whole game of who gets in first with the reviews. These days there’s so much paper to fill, or digital paper to fill, that whoever writes the first few things gets cut and pasted. Whoever gets their opinion in first has all that power. Especially for a band like ours, it’s totally the luck of the draw whether that person is into us or not. It just seems wildly unfair, I think.
